It has finally happened! I finally have a website with a blog!
While sifting through old notes I came across an old note that captured some preliminary thoughts on blogging. Below are a couple of entries in a note called “Journey to the Center of Blogging”:

So I’m thinking about blogging. Not sure what I would want to write about. I would like to write about some thoughts. Maybe I should create a “interface”. Represent myself using different aspects.

And so it dawned on me, I could just blog about the various projects that I’m pursuing. First I have to get my website built… Thanks Google Reader!
So as you can see for over ten years I’ve been talking about having a website. Given my current experience with getting this one up and running, I see why I’m just now able to pull the trigger. To be completely honest, it’s really just life but we’re not going to get into that. First off, I just had to host my own website. I’ve internalized this misconception about having a computer science degree. I should be able to do anything related to computers with ease, right?!? I’m a failure if I don’t know how to host my website from scratch!!
Twelve years later I still can’t build a website. I know how to register a domain, configure DNS records, and configure a ci pipeline but I still cannot do the “pretty website” thing. I outsourced the initial design to a friend and later leveraged the services of a Fiverr contractor to convert it to a Hugo website.
But who cares! I finally got it started so let’s go!!
I’m approaching the 10 year anniversary of being a salaried employee. On December 14, 2024 will mark the ten year anniversary of my first full-time software development job. I would like to take the time to finally look back in hopes of gaining clarity on what the next ten years should look like.
I will sprinkle in some topics covering current projects. Developing APIs that provision cloud infrastructure via Kubernetes currently takes up most of my day so expect to see some content surrounding that area of tech.
I’m also considering writing about building, deploying, and supporting this website. It was quite a journey to even get to this point. I’m reminded why I don’t do frontend work.
Another delay to getting this website up is me building out a personal knowledge repository. I would like to eventually make a subset of it public. As a side effect, I hope to write about the details surrounding that process as well. My desire is to write about technical topics in such a way that anyone can understand it This is a sincere effort to work on my writing and communication skills.
It’s been a long time coming. I finally have a website and can’t wait to share with the world what I have learned over the years. I hope you as a reader enjoy the journey you’re about to take with me.
